Dr. Jamal Nazrul Islam: The Bangladeshi Cosmologist Who Explored the Universe
Dr. Jamal Nazrul Islam was one of Bangladesh’s most distinguished theoretical physicists, mathematicians and cosmologists. His work focused on some of the biggest questions in modern science: the origin, structure and ultimate fate of the universe.
Born in Jhenaidah in 1939, Dr. Islam developed an early passion for mathematics and science. He studied at the University of Calcutta and later pursued advanced education at Cambridge University, where he earned a PhD in applied mathematics.
His academic career took him to several leading institutions around the world. He worked on general relativity, cosmology, black holes and mathematical physics. His research contributed to humanity’s understanding of how the universe behaves on its largest scales.
One of his best-known books, The Ultimate Fate of the Universe, introduced complex ideas in cosmology to a wider audience. His ability to connect sophisticated mathematics with fundamental questions about existence made him particularly respected among scientists and science enthusiasts.
Despite achieving international recognition, Dr. Islam chose to return to Bangladesh and contribute to scientific education and research in his homeland. He became associated with the University of Chittagong and played an important role in developing scientific culture in Bangladesh.
His life represents an important message: world-class scientific achievement does not require forgetting one’s roots. Dr. Jamal Nazrul Islam demonstrated that a scientist from Bangladesh could contribute meaningfully to humanity’s understanding of the cosmos.
His legacy continues to inspire young Bangladeshis interested in mathematics, physics and the mysteries of the universe.
